What is a Peer Support Specialist or a Peer Mentor?
Peer Support Specialists and Peer Mentors receives specialized training and certification through the State of Michigan to provide Peer Services. To become a Certified Peer a person has to be in recovery and is, or has, received public mental health services. Currently NBHS has 1 full time Peer Support in Iron County, 1 Peer Support and 1 Peer Mentor in Dickinson County, and a part time Peer in Menominee.
What does a Peer Support Specialist do?
A Peer Support Specialist can help support you in overcoming barriers, setting goals, and advocating for your needs. They can also help you get back into the community and learn to cope with issues you face in everyday life. Peers also are experts in navigating the mental health system, applying for benefits, finding housing, and obtaining employment. They can meet you one on one in office, at home, or in the community. They also run groups that assist in reaching and sustaining recovery through overall health and wellness.
